SortBikeNet

Data built with v0.0.0 from OpenStreetMap data of Jan 28, 2026

SortBikeNet tackles the sequencing problem: given a plan to build a bicycle network, in what order should the segments be constructed to arrive at a functional network as soon as possible? The tool sorts a plan's segments following many possible strategies like coverage, directness, road hierarchy, or a random ordering as a baseline. For each ordering it measures the tradeoff between coverage (how much of the city is reached) and directness (how direct the trips are). Only the Paris plan is available for which synthetic orders can be compared against the order in which the network was actually built between 2021 and 2026. Two strategies outperform the actual growth in both coverage and directness. This helps planners phase an implementation to deliver best connectivity already after the first kilometers.

Explore orderings

SortBikeNet needs a city's complete bike network plan and the dates on which each part of it was built, so only Paris is shown at this time. The as-built order is based on data from Paris en Selle(opens in new tab), a Paris cycling advocacy group. Starred orderings beat the as-built order on both area reached and directness, the two yardsticks the research weighs against each other.
